Willetts & Doig Optometrists was founded by Geoff Willetts in 1974. Originally, Geoff was the sole owner and lead optometrist of the practice, until Dr Ross Doig came on board in 2000 and the Willetts & Doig partnership was born.
Over the following years, Geoff and Ross worked to regularly develop and modernise their practice, investing in some of the best technology on the market to provide the most advanced and thorough eye care experience. Their efforts meant that Willetts & Doig Optometrists were the first practice on the Isle of Wight to introduce an OCT scanner to the Island and recently updated this to the latest model, becoming only the third practice in the whole of the UK to have this technology. They also have the latest 3D digitised test charts to suit all age groups for example.
Geoff retired in 2009, and today Ross remains the owner of the practice working alongside his colleague Michael Hartigan.
Michael also has over 20 years’ experience in the industry – having started in the manufacturing sector, he then became a dispensing optician and a contact lens optician before re-training as an optometrist. Michael has previously worked in the Somerset area, where he was accredited for the Somerset Acute Eye Care service and post cataract follow up, and has been able to fully integrate these skills into his work at Willetts & Doig.
Between them, Ross and Michael have a wide spectrum of knowledge about everything to do with optical care, and are both in ideal positions to fully understand each patient’s needs and achieve the best possible care in each case.
Ross and Michael are ably supported and assisted by a team of outstanding staff. We’ve even been told by previous clients that our interest in each of our patients is ‘legendary’, and we’re proud of the personal approach that the whole team at Willetts & Doig takes with everyone who walks through the door.
Sandra Doig is the practice manager overseeing the day to day running of the practice and is responsible not just for keeping Ross out of mischief, but also choosing and updating the diverse selection of frames we stock, many of which are unique to the practice.
Liz Adams, Fiona Skinner, Elaine Gable and Jodi Brundrett work in reception, and are likely to be some of the first people you see when you visit the practice. They can carry out most eyewear adjustments as necessary and are expert at helping you with the initial selection of your new glasses. All of our staff are trained to help Ross and Michael offer the comprehensive eye care that Willetts & Doig are known for throughout the Island; they might carry out your visual fields test, for example, and then pass the results to Ross or Michael to be checked.
Amanda Nuckley is our professionally qualified dispensing optician. Amanda started working as an optical technician after school and has built up a huge depth of knowledge and experience on her way to becoming fully qualified. Amanda graduated from University in 2014 having won awards for Best Undergraduate Student and Best Case Records on the way, beating students from all across the UK. If there is anything you want to know about lenses and frames, Amanda will have the answer!
Amanda, Fiona and Liz are all also able to assist Ross and Michael with contact lens patients, giving detailed instructions on wearing and caring for their lenses.
Cleet Holmberg – our on-site technician – has over 20 years’ experience manufacturing spectacles for numerous opticians on the south coast. Recognising the quality service we provide, Cleet joined us in early 2014 and is now solely responsible for ensuring your new eyewear will be completed to the highest standard and ready for you to collect as quickly as possible.
Rex the Airedale terrier completes our team – he sometimes patrols the practice to make sure that standards are being maintained, and you may well meet him on your next visit to us!
You can spot any of our staff by their shining team spirit, focus and passion for what they do. Feel free to ask the team any questions you might have about any aspect of your eye health or appointment – they’ll be more than happy to answer your queries and put your mind at ease.
