About Us

For over 40 years our independent opticians in Cowes has cared for the visual needs of countless families from the Island and beyond and now, with Covid-19 in mind, we were the first practice on the island to have invested in Optomap Ultra-Widefield Imaging for a safer eye test for all our patients and the optometrists!

Early signs of disease can often be present in the periphery of the retina and can remain undetected with traditional tests and standard retinal photography.

Optomap ultra-widefield imaging is a quick and painless test that lets us view up to 80% of your retina in a single image where standard photography might only capture 15% at one time.

Best of all, with Covid-19 and safe working practices in mind, this is carried out at a much longer working distance than traditional tests helping keep you and us as safe as possible from Covid-19.

Eye Examinations

When you visit the optician, there are a lot of different procedures and tests that can be used to check all aspects of your eye health. If you’re not sure what to expect, this can sometimes be a little daunting. At Willetts & Doig Optometrists, however, you can be sure that you’ll always receive a comprehensive assessment from a reassuring and experienced optometrist.

Before your optometrist starts your eye examination, they will ask you a few questions about your general health, lifestyle and family history of particular eye and medical conditions. As well as allowing them to gain an understanding of your visual requirements in everyday life, this also allows your eye test to be tailored to your personal needs.

Your eye examination will last for approximately 40 minutes, to allow time for your optometrist to thoroughly examine your eyes and vision. During this time, you will be asked to complete a series of tests which are all designed to assess your visual acuity and eye health.

Once your examination is complete, your optometrist will explain their findings to you, including any updates to your prescription that might be required. They’ll also be happy to answer any questions you have, as well as take the time to recommend suitable products for your needs, wants and lifestyle.

Children’s Eye Examinations

Did you know your little one can have their eyes tested from as young as one year old? As well as monitoring the development of your child’s vision, regular visits to the optician allows our qualified and experienced optometrists to spot any potential problems at an early stage.

At Willetts & Doig Optometrists we recommend your child has their first eye examination no later than their 4th birthday, but earlier if you have any concerns or if there is a family history of lazy eye or squint.

When the sun makes an appearance you reach for the sun cream to protect your skin. But did you know the sun can also have negative effects on your vision?

Sunlight is comprised of 3 types of ultraviolet rays – UVA, UVB and UVC. UVA and UVB rays can have both short and long term effects on your vision if your eyes are not protected.

We stock a great range of world-renowned Maui Jim frames, recognised for their specialist features that make them ideal for sporty and fashion-conscious individuals alike – these are particularly impressive when made to your own prescription.
